Voices of the Mercat Cross

Read the memories, frustrations, and demands of hundreds of residents standing up to protect Dunfermline’s heritage.

Council Neglect & Action
"The Mercat Cross is a symbol of what Dunfermline is. The current state of it is appalling. The Mercat Cross should be removed and included in the space being created called Bruce Square. There is no vision from Fife Council, just blinkered approaches to obvious needs. "

"It is part of our heritage and looks amazing. The council are useless when it comes to promoting our city and this is just one more to add to the list of our city’s neglect. Would be repaired by now if it was in St Andrews"

"Without our history we have no sense of community. Without our community we have ...pretty much what we now have, neighbours bickering online, kids running riot, old people isolated and ignored. everyone ( age, race, beliefs) scared and bullied. The cross should be a symbol of our city standing higher than the individual and more solid and lasting because its our collective history. "

"It is very important to us and to the history of the city of Dunfermline. The money wasted on that square is totally ridiculous and should have been spent on the likes of the Abbey and the Mercat Cross. I really hope you publish all the comments from everyone and not filter out the ones you don't want to hear. "

"The main structure in middle of so called City Centre. We should have it repaired immediately. Poor showing with regards to the rich history the City has. Fife Council should be ashamed!!! "

"A symbol of Dunfermlines heritage that has marked our City for years. Neglected by Fife Council "

"It is the symbol of the centre of the City and has been for generations, the total disregard that Fife Council has shown is ridiculous. Any attempt to engage with anyone is met with 'it is being looked into' or 'soon', this is not good enough, especially as over £1 million has been spent on an open area, We are a historical city and are not being treated as such, tourism should be encouraged."

"Pride in the High St has disappeared due to many reasons. The Council are certainly a big problem. Local monuments should be be a source of pride"

"Its a ancient part of our towns history, a meeting point, a place I used to sit on the steps of as a child while waiting on mum coming out the bank and where we'd sit and and eat a treat from the bakers. The fact it has lay broken for so long while the council waste thousands of pounds on that concrete pad nobody wanted, sorry bruce square, is abhorrent. "

"Dunfermline has many beautiful features and areas which are completely neglected, it is shameful of our council, we have enough history to be a tourist destination but the council prevent this"

"I’m not originally from Dunfermline but feel that as a tourist destination, and Scotlands newest city, it is really important that our heritage is maintained. If the Council can find money to create a concrete square in the gap site they should be ensuring that historic landmarks are looked after as a priority "

"It's always been a focal point in Dunfermline. At the moment the disregard from FC towards fixing it, adds to the general feeling of neglect towards it by those at FC headquarters "

"Heritage should be part of the social fabric of any town. Fife Council need to budget properly as council tax is higher. Than it’s ever been. "

"It’s a historical structure of the town and part of the heritage. Neglecting it gives the impression that it’s not important. It’s a meeting point. It’s a talking point. People sit and watch the world go buy here. Kids climb on it. This should have been repaired before money was wasted on the stupid town “square” currently being built. Oh and shouldn’t the vandals be named and shamed and made to help carry out the works to repair the damage they caused! "

"It’s a historic site and as such, it should be looked after by the council, as and when required. As an alternative, could it be moved to a safer place or stay where it is but erect a railing or a guard, the same height as the monument, placed around it?? After it has been repaired? "

"My 3x great grandfather designed part of the Mercat Cross, so I feel that I have a deep connection with it. It is so sad to see it in this neglected state - and it is disgraceful that the Council have taken so long to repair it. Whilst I would join a Heritage Watch group, fundamentally it is the Council’s duty to make these repairs in a timely manner and prioritise Dunfermline’s heritage. Without its heritage, Dunfermline is just another boring high street. The Council need to invest further in Dunfermline’s heritage to boost pride in the area for residents, and create more opportunities to bring tourism and prosperity to the city. "

"No particular attachment to it but the Broken Windows Theory has been proven and we can’t expect visitors and residents to respect the city and its heritage if no effort is made to protect and repair it by the council. The money being wasted on the space further down the high street is a complete waste of money and should never have been approved."

"It’s a central point in Dunfermline for meeting, it’s a historically important monument, akin to the Carnegie statue and its being neglected"
