Voices of the Mercat Cross
Read the memories, frustrations, and demands of hundreds of residents standing up to protect Dunfermline’s heritage.
City Centre & Landmark
"It’s an important landmark that needs to return"
Council Neglect & Action
"The Mercat Cross is a symbol of what Dunfermline is. The current state of it is appalling. The Mercat Cross should be removed and included in the space being created called Bruce Square. There is no vision from Fife Council, just blinkered approaches to obvious needs. "
Council Neglect & Action
"It is part of our heritage and looks amazing. The council are useless when it comes to promoting our city and this is just one more to add to the list of our city’s neglect.
Would be repaired by now if it was in St Andrews"
Council Neglect & Action
"Without our history we have no sense of community. Without our community we have ...pretty much what we now have, neighbours bickering online, kids running riot, old people isolated and ignored. everyone ( age, race, beliefs) scared and bullied. The cross should be a symbol of our city standing higher than the individual and more solid and lasting because its our collective history. "
Heritage & History
"Shows our city's heritage and should be maintained for future families to see and be proud of"
Vandalism & Safety
"It is a significant monument in our City and should be repaired. If anyone is found guilty of crimes of vandalism, they should be made to pay towards repair costs"
Council Neglect & Action
"It is very important to us and to the history of the city of Dunfermline. The money wasted on that square is totally ridiculous and should have been spent on the likes of the Abbey and the Mercat Cross. I really hope you publish all the comments from everyone and not filter out the ones you don't want to hear.
"
Council Neglect & Action
"The main structure in middle of so called City Centre. We should have it repaired immediately. Poor showing with regards to the rich history the City has. Fife Council should be ashamed!!! "
Heritage & History
"Currently living elsewhere, but born, brought up in Dunfermline. Family resident for centuries, and descendants of Ralph Erskine. Heritage is extremely important to me."
Council Neglect & Action
"A symbol of Dunfermlines heritage that has marked our City for years. Neglected by Fife Council "
Heritage & History
"Part of our heritage and personally I feel those who vandalized it should be made towards repair. Or even ask the The Repair Show on the Road"
General Importance
"Our family has always used the merkat cross as a meetup point and it's disgraceful that it's left damaged because of vandals. "
Council Neglect & Action
"It is the symbol of the centre of the City and has been for generations, the total disregard that Fife Council has shown is ridiculous. Any attempt to engage with anyone is met with 'it is being looked into' or 'soon', this is not good enough, especially as over £1 million has been spent on an open area, We are a historical city and are not being treated as such, tourism should be encouraged."
City Centre & Landmark
"Important and central to town better than all that work on the front of the bus stance"
Heritage & History
"It is of great historical importance to the town/city"
General Importance
"Old years night!"
Heritage & History
"It’s always been a part of our history. “ meet at the cross” it’s a monument that’s been at the heart of Dunfermline since I was a kid. Albeit in different areas of the City."
Heritage & History
"Having lived in Dunfermline for nearly 10 years and moving from a much larger city full of history, I understand the importance this piece plays in the history of the city.
With increasing visitors on a daily basis the first impression the damage is giving is very poor. "
