Voices of the Mercat Cross
Read the memories, frustrations, and demands of hundreds of residents standing up to protect Dunfermline’s heritage.
Vandalism & Safety
"It is a significant monument in our City and should be repaired. If anyone is found guilty of crimes of vandalism, they should be made to pay towards repair costs"
Vandalism & Safety
"It negatively impacts the High street which also is a disgrace due to neglect and poor condition of paving/roads. Place looks shabby and not what you expect from its new City status. I had American visitors last year and found myself showing them around consciously avoiding certain areas which are embarrassing. Fortunately they were so impressed with the history, oldness and the Glen that they didn't comment on the neglected areas. They were shocked when I showed them the unicorn behind the Abbot house, from top of mercat cross and explained it was there due to vandalism. Can only hope the new City square doesn't end up the same way once finished! Maybe more should be done to stop the youngsters congregating in centre of town. CCTV, more community policing, better education to improve social responsibility and respect....I could go on and on!"
Vandalism & Safety
"It’s the symbolic heart of the city where, prior to the vandalism, I’d choose to meet friends and colleagues. It made me feel like a citizen and reminds me of my responsibility to the people of Dunfermline, its cultural life and its economic prosperity."
Vandalism & Safety
"It’s an iconic part of the centre; been ignored and not maintained long before the last act of vandalism "
Vandalism & Safety
"It’s the heart of the city and many people have many memories…. Def need cameras put up to prevent further vandalism. "
Vandalism & Safety
"It’s important to protect and repair to preserve history of Dunfermline.
CCTV Cameras should be installed. Vandalism is unacceptable and it shouldn’t be for the community as a whole to fund it by donation. CCTV Should hopefully make those responsible for their actions pay! "
Vandalism & Safety
"All our heritage is worth preserving. In today’s society it is not surprising that the history of the city is being destroyed, sadly a sign of the times. "
Vandalism & Safety
"It's part of the history of Dunfermline and should have been repaired immediately and made vandal proof.
Vandalism isn't the fault of the law abiding Dunfermline public and it's unacceptable that the Council and the Police aren't doing more has to protect the City.
On a side note and being cynical, how long do you think it will take before the new square in the High Street is targeted?"
Vandalism & Safety
"It is a central part of our town and culture and should be restored. I believe acts of vandalism should be funded by the perpetrators as reparations for their actions. "
Vandalism & Safety
"The Mercat Cross is a valuable part of Dunfermline’s heritage and indeed its history. For too long our councillors and our council are neglecting our City Centre and are spending our money on vanity projects without consulting with the Dunfermline residents. Spending £1.6 million on a city square that nobody wanted in itself is sheer vandalism. The City Square was scheduled to take 18 months to complete from last September 2025 and now the council have stated it will complete this summer in time for the children’s gala, that’s only 10 months & not 18 months. Something is wrong with the councils fiscal responsibility in spending taxpayers money, think we are due some rebate ie enough to repair the Mercat Cross and money for Mural in the Maygate.

Vandalism & Safety
"It’s an important feature and should have been fixed before now. But what was the reason for delay? Maybe it’s justified. Compared to some of the essential services the council has to provide, this shouldn’t be a top priority. Especially when it was vandalism that caused it. "
Vandalism & Safety
"Its a symbol of Dunfermline.
The council or government shouldn't need to have a fund for vandalism. It should have better consequences..."
Vandalism & Safety
"Born in Dunfermline it’s such ashame seeing our high street and its heritage being destroyed and neglected! "
Vandalism & Safety
"It is an important historical monument to the city of Dunfermline and the people that maliciously destroyed it should have been made to pay for its restoration "
Vandalism & Safety
"It being destroyed is history destroyed "
Vandalism & Safety
"We have LOST way too much history in Dunfermline over the last 50 years In 1976 the city/town was as it had been for generations and over the next couple of decades planning destroyed large areas , when Edinburgh had already learned from its mistakes !"
