Voices of the Mercat Cross
Read the memories, frustrations, and demands of hundreds of residents standing up to protect Dunfermline’s heritage.

"Dunfermline is my birthplace and has been my home for over 30 years. It's rich history and evidence of this all over is one of the main attractions of visitors. The cross cannot be allowed to ruin and disappear after having stood for hundreds of years. I also firmly believe that those who damage such should have to pay towards repairing. "
Heritage & History
"It represented our Past and our future. Being there in the Centre of the City, supports the city status, it was an important part for gatherings of the Public, by the City Cryer, who made announcements regarding important events such as Births Deaths of Royalty, War, Peace being declared, and celebrations of the New Year. Most Cities and Towns, Royal Burghs and Burghs had one, as an important part of their daily life.

"Historic. The marker by which we all use to meet up.
It always takes you back to an older time, when you look at it. It makes you remember just how old Dunfermline is."

Heritage & History
"It is an historical monument. We are a city but the state of our high street is not.in line with city status. Dunfermline needs to make the most of its historical features!"
Heritage & History
"Represents our past, present and hopefully future history.
I do believe that vandals or their families should pay towards the repairs."
Heritage & History
"It's a major landmark for our city. We constantly fail to promote the history of our city and do little to attract visitors. The apathy surrounding the cross just confirms this. We need to support this and other historic areas before they disappear completely "

"Part of our city’s heritage"
Heritage & History
"It is an immensley important part of the cities history, tradition and cultural tapestey going back at least to the 1400's. You cant be an ancient Scottish historic Royal Burgh and not have your mercat cross!!!"
Heritage & History
"It is an important part of our history and holds many personal memories for me. It is a scandal that this has still not been repaired. This should be prioritised. "

"We are fortunate to be one of the cities to still have one. It's a shame to have already lost such a huge portion of the build heritage and we really need to push hard to retain what we have left. The past has shaped what we have today and often informs our future. I believe it should be a right to understand your own heritage and the more we lose, the less that education can continue for the generations to come. Let's not deny them the right to learn about their past. It's is part of all of our identity. "
