"It's been present for generations, only to be vandalised by feral kids who are constantly out of control in Dunfermline. The loss of the cross is a huge blow to Dunfermline's image and reputation as a safe, prosperous and historic city."

"It has become a tradition in our family that our grandchildren always have a photo taken of them sitting on the Mercat Cross. I am old enough to remember when the Mercat Cross was in a different site. "

"The Mercat Cross is a symbol of Dunfermline's status as Ancient Capital. And its current position at the foot of Cross Wynd indicates where the original entrance gate to the Ancient Royal city of Dunfermline was located before the Great Fire of Dunfermline. Which is why the Cross should be repaired instantaneously. And also if it is moved to Bruce Square, another monument indicating this historic entry way into our city must be erected."

"It’s an essential part of the history of our historic city. It looks awful as it is. If the original damage had been repaired early it wouldn’t be in the state it is now. "

"The Mercat Cross has been in place for the whole of my lifetime. Many Hogmanay gatherings over the years. It is very sad to not only see its current condition, but the fact that there is no urgency to repair speaks volumes about the councils attitude towards our towns history. "
