Voices of the Mercat Cross
Read the memories, frustrations, and demands of hundreds of residents standing up to protect Dunfermline’s heritage.
Civic Pride & Identity
"Pride in my hometown. "
Council Neglect & Action
"This is a symbol of Dunfermline’s history and is prominent on the High Street. If it has taken over two years for Fife Council to think about repairing it, I wonder how important the appearance of the High Street is to them? What impression does this give to visitors? A neglected and run-down High Street does not engender a sense of pride in our city. "
Heritage & History
"Dunfermline is my birthplace and has been my home for over 30 years. It's rich history and evidence of this all over is one of the main attractions of visitors. The cross cannot be allowed to ruin and disappear after having stood for hundreds of years. I also firmly believe that those who damage such should have to pay towards repairing. "
Heritage & History
"Represents our past, present and hopefully future history.
I do believe that vandals or their families should pay towards the repairs."

Heritage & History
"It's been present for generations, only to be vandalised by feral kids who are constantly out of control in Dunfermline. The loss of the cross is a huge blow to Dunfermline's image and reputation as a safe, prosperous and historic city."
General Importance
"Memories of youth from New Year and a great meeting point"

"It’s an iconic part of the centre; been ignored and not maintained long before the last act of vandalism "

"It's an intergral part of Dunfermlines history. "

"Part of our local heritage which needs to be repaired as soon as possible."

Heritage & History
"It's an interesting addition to the high street and has a lot of historical value"
Council Neglect & Action
"It's an integral part of our identity, the council seem to neglect our heritage and invest in pathetic identity projects. i.e. the city Square. An abhorrent waste of money."
Heritage & History
"Historic centre of the auld capital of Scotland. Not only that I think that a representation of the old Ports/Gates e.g. East Port, West Port etc. should be rebuilt around our town centre to kickstart a restoration of our long history. Also the facades of the shops in the High Street should be made to adhere to a design which reflects our heritage and history and not the plastic carbuncles that currently adorn shops like BetFred etc. "
