Voices of the Mercat Cross

Read the memories, frustrations, and demands of hundreds of residents standing up to protect Dunfermline’s heritage.

Heritage & History
"Dunfermline is my birthplace and has been my home for over 30 years. It's rich history and evidence of this all over is one of the main attractions of visitors. The cross cannot be allowed to ruin and disappear after having stood for hundreds of years. I also firmly believe that those who damage such should have to pay towards repairing. "

Council Neglect & Action
"This is a symbol of Dunfermline’s history and is prominent on the High Street. If it has taken over two years for Fife Council to think about repairing it, I wonder how important the appearance of the High Street is to them? What impression does this give to visitors? A neglected and run-down High Street does not engender a sense of pride in our city. "

"It is an important part of our history and holds many personal memories for me. It is a scandal that this has still not been repaired. This should be prioritised. "

Heritage & History
"It's a major landmark for our city. We constantly fail to promote the history of our city and do little to attract visitors. The apathy surrounding the cross just confirms this. We need to support this and other historic areas before they disappear completely "

Vandalism & Safety
"It’s important to protect and repair to preserve history of Dunfermline. CCTV Cameras should be installed. Vandalism is unacceptable and it shouldn’t be for the community as a whole to fund it by donation. CCTV Should hopefully make those responsible for their actions pay! "

Council Neglect & Action
"It’s a historical structure of the town and part of the heritage. Neglecting it gives the impression that it’s not important. It’s a meeting point. It’s a talking point. People sit and watch the world go buy here. Kids climb on it. This should have been repaired before money was wasted on the stupid town “square” currently being built. Oh and shouldn’t the vandals be named and shamed and made to help carry out the works to repair the damage they caused! "
